Don't look for a connection between Zonnebeke and the sun; in 1072 the village name was Sinnebecche. After the devastating bombings of the First World War, the Church of Our Lady was rebuilt and consecrated in 1924. The church, with a reinforced concrete roof, is considered the first modern church in this country.
In 2004, the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 was opened, as a successor to the former Regional Museum. As a visitor, you will be guided along the five battles that raged around Ypres. In addition to an extensive collection of photographs, there are also historical objects on display and you can descend into a British 'dug-out' or a German trench.
