The fort of Nieuwendamme was built in the 17th century to defend Nieuwpoort. During World War I, Nieuwpoort was shelled from this position. However, the significance of the location goes further back in time. In 1167, the Testerep was dammed here, a waterway that separated the adjacent coastal area, including Ostend and Westende, from the actual mainland.
