Description

They stand on the border between Sint-Pauwels and Kemzeke and were built to put an end to the long-standing dispute between the church masters of St-Pauwels and the poor administration of Kemzeke about who was actually entitled to the sacrificial gifts of the tree chapel that used to stand on this site. The land here actually belongs to Kemzeke while the church of St-Pauwels received the offerings from the tree chapel. After a heated argument, the conciliatory pastor of Sint-Pauwels went to Kemzeke and donated the sacrificial money there. The church masters were not happy with this and therefore built a second chapel. The Twistkapelletjes, protected in 1981, can be found along the beautifully winding Heerbaan, an old Roman road that meanders sharply through the wase farm landscape with pollard willows.
