The construction of the Dessel-Turnhout-Schoten canal was first started in 1844. It wasn't until 1865 that the works really took off. They wanted to stimulate the industry in the area, but today there is little shipping. On the 64-kilometre-long and 20-metre-wide canal, boats of maximum 600 tonnes are allowed, with a draught that may not exceed 1.9 metres. Most of the ten locks are still operated by hand.
