The landscape type, of which the Grote Geul is a good example, was formed by the seawater breaking through the dikes during floods and then sanding out deep gullies. When these gullies were removed from the operation of ebb and flow after the dikes were re-closed, they gradually silted up. However, puddles the size of the Great Trench are never completely silted up and provide today's nature lovers with a varied flora and fauna. The nature reserve can only be visited during guided walks.
