In the early 17th century, the current Sweet Waters were a large swamp. Around that time, work began on excavating ponds with dams in between to control the water level. The inhabitants of Leuven came here in the 1900s to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Exactly when the name Zoete Waters originated is not clear. Ernest Claes also knew the area, because in his book Leuven, o schone dagen he tells about a visit that apparently pleased him best. From 1932 an amusement park was built on the Zoete Waters. An important part of it was a wooden velodrome, where former world champion Poeske Scherens occasionally came to train.
