About a quarter of a century ago, Watou gained a lot of attention through the organization of the Poetry Summer, which grew into an annual event. Many became acquainted with this Popering borough in this way and also discovered the rural tranquility, the monuments, the beautiful landscape, the local beers and the cozy cafes.
On the village square is the Sint-Bavo church, of which original Romanesque parts have been preserved. When it was enlarged in the 16th century, the Gothic was given a leading role. Especially because of the rich church furniture from the first half of the 18th century, a closer acquaintance is recommended. Furthermore, the church also houses some statues and paintings from the 17th century.
On a gastronomic level, the local beers deserve all the attention. In the Van Eecke brewery, Poperings Hommelbier flows mainly from the brew kettles, but also Kapittel, Watou's Witbier and Van Eecke Christmas. Brewery Sint-Bernardus (Trappistenweg 23) provides various beers with that name (Pater, Abt, Prior and Tripel) and also Witbier and Grottenbier. Helleketelbier, Zatte Bie, Kriekedebie and Plokkersbier also originated in Watou, but brewery De Bie moved to Loker a few years ago.
