The Provincial Domain Het Leen is a continuous forest area of 225 hectares with an arboretum on either side of the access path featuring 3000 species of shrubs and trees. The name refers to the feudal term 'leen'. The uncultivated area was granted by the Counts of Flanders as a fief to the lords of Spiere-Helkijn, hence the name Spiersbos. From 1300, the Abbey of Drongen and the St. John's Hospital of Bruges extracted peat here. Subsequently, the area was reforested. From 1938 to 1972, there was a military ammunition depot located here. Afterwards, the province of East Flanders purchased the grounds for passive recreation. The new building houses the forest information center, and in the old main buildings, you will find a collection of tools from old crafts.
