At the orientation table on top of the Boomse cuesta, you have a beautiful panorama over the Rupel region. The monumental tower of the Sint-Romboutskathedraal in Mechelen is the most striking landmark in the landscape. On a clear day, you can even see Brussels. At your feet lies the Rumst district of Terhagen. The Rupelian clay was deposited 35 million years ago. Later, the Boomse cuesta emerged in the landscape due to the pressure from new deposits to the north of the area. The edges where the pressure from the thinner layers was lower rose up, while the thicker deposits further north pushed the layers deeper. This created two slopes at the edge: a steep one towards the Rupel and a gentler one towards Antwerp. It is precisely at this edge that the clay comes to the surface. Centuries of excavation eventually resulted in the steep clay front that you now see in the northern direction.
