's Gravenwezel

's-Gravenwezel was called Wesele in 1229, which means meadow land. It was a fief of the Lords of Wesele, hence the later name 't Sgrevenweseleen. In the late Middle Ages, wealthy Antwerp residents chose the area for their pleasure houses, hunting, and other entertainment. Until World War II, the village retained its rural character. After that, a period of major subdivisions followed. Nevertheless, the surroundings remained a green lung for Antwerp. The current St. Catherine's Church dates from 1876, although quite a bit of furniture comes from the former church. The panel Triumph of St. Catherine from the late 16th-century Flemish School also belongs to it. The monastery you pass at Oudaen is now a school.
