The Damiaan Museum is housed in the birthplace of the world-renowned Father Damiaan, born in 1840 as Jozef De Veuster. In 1859, he joined the order of the Picpus Fathers. Four years later, he left as a missionary for Hawaii. He volunteered for transfer to the leper colony on Molokai. There, he worked tirelessly for more than ten years for a more dignified existence for the leprosy patients. He succumbed to the disease there in 1889, having been affected by it himself. In the meantime, his commitment has found a global echo. The Picpus Fathers purchased the birthplace in 1895 and built a monastery alongside it. In 1975, the monastery complex was transformed into a geriatric institution. The old neo-Gothic monastery chapel has since become the parish church of Saint Joseph the Worker.
