A Spuikom consists of basins or polders that are connected to a seaport via a sluice that was traditionally allowed to fill up during high tide and then emptied forcefully during low tide. This way, excess silt could be removed from the ports, even without the help of dredging vessels. However, this Spuikom was never used to combat the siltation of the port of Ostend. In 1912, during the first trial discharges, the currents generated caused damage to the quay walls. At the end of World War I, the discharge installation was destroyed, and in 1926 it was decided not to restore it anymore.
Now, the Spuikom is a vibrant water sports area and oyster farm.
