The digging of the Schipdonk Canal, together with the digging of the Leopold Canal, was one of the first major infrastructure works in young Belgium. From slightly upstream of Deinze, the canal splits from the Lys to run in a northerly direction, right through the center of Nevele, to the Ghent-Bruges canal. This canal is much older than the Schipdonk canal and because the dirty water from the Schipdonk canal was not wanted in the Ghent-Bruges canal, a water lock and a siphon were built so that the water from the diversion canal could run under the other. The 'Goed van Schipdonck' near this junction would give the canal its name.
