The "Woestijnkapel" or Chapel of the Holy Cross was erected in the 13th century, when a shepherd's dogs dug up a yellow copper crucifix by scratching the ground. The crucifix, which must date from around 1280, quickly became the object of worship and the chapel became a place of pilgrimage for pilgrims coming to the Woestijn. Nevertheless, the current chapel was not built until 1600 and the unvaulted portal was added in 1713. Inside is a Baroque altar dating back to 1635, surrounded by two Corinthian pillars. Today, the chapel and its beautiful surroundings are especially popular with brides and grooms.
