The former buildings of the sugar factory on Sint-Pietersveld originally housed the "Ecole Réformée de Ruyslede". From 1852 to 1913 sailors were also trained there. Because of the large influx, a Succursale (= branch) was established in 1854, which was known to the population as suckersoale or sugar hall. The name certainly became appropriate when begging or land-walking children under the age of 11 were later included. On 13 December 1923, King Albert I laid the foundation stone of the buildings
of the Radio Maritime Services. The Wingene transmitting station was officially inaugurated on 3 October 1927 and allowed direct connections to seagoing vessels all over the world. Even today, the numerous transmission masts offer an impressive
sight. The buildings and installations have been protected since March 2000. The nature reserve de Gulke Putten with an area of almost 100 ha actually arose because the surroundings of the transmission towers had to be kept open and forest-free. The domain around the installations is currently managed by the non-profit organisation Natuurpunt.
