The Saint Alexius Beguinage is a square beguinage that dates back to 1288. The 61 houses, grouped around a grassy square with a small church, form an oasis of peace in the heart of the city. Just like the Belfry, the beguinage was also classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999.
Beguinage Museum
To keep the memory of the beguines alive, a small house (no. 11 - H. Bonifacius) was set up as a beguine's house. In 1975 the last beguine, Grand Miss Ernestine De Bruyne, died. Her former home (no. 25 - H. Begga) was set up as the second part of the beguinage museum.
Museum of Folklore
The beguinage also houses a Museum of Folklore. Spread over three floors and numerous rooms, we are introduced to the domestic, work and leisure life of previous generations.
