The name Scheldevelde first appears in the charters of St. Peter's Abbey in 814-844 and was the name of an entire region that stretched along the Scheldt, from the south of Ghent to Kruishoutem.
It was not until the 18th century that this domain of the Scheldevelde grew into an important domain with a centrally located country house (on the site of the former farm) with systematic mining around it, characterized by a radiary net of seven lanes.
The current construction comes mainly from the De Potter-Surmont family who had the old mansion demolished in 1846 and had it replaced by the current castle with a late classical slant. The design was by the well-known Ghent architect Minard.
