On the territory of the parish of Erwetegem an early Frankish settlement, probably in the 5th century, was built, as the Saal-Frankish name indicates: "Hariwith - inga - heim" or: "residence of the people of Hariwith".
A point of interest in the municipality is the classicist St. Peter's Church with Louis XVI furniture.
