Ter Doest is a former abbey, located in the borough of Lissewege. The abbey played an important role in the reclamation of areas in Flanders, Zeeland and Holland and in the wool trade with the Flemish cities.
In 1106, Lambert, the Lord of Lissewege who lived at the Upperhof, gave a domain with a chapel to the Benedictines who founded an abbey there. In 1175 it was taken over by Cistercians, from the abbey of Our Lady of the Dunes in Koksijde, and in 1624 it was united with Our Lady of the Dunes.
The tithe barn dates from 1250 and is the only remaining abbey building. Two rows of 10 oak pillars each support the unique oak roof trusses for almost 800 years. Until 1711 the barn was covered with straw, now the roof consists of 38,000 Boom roof tiles.
