Visé is known as a place of pilgrimage. Here, since the 8th century, the Church of Saint Martin and Hadelinus has stood. The relics of Saint Hadelinus are housed in a beautiful reliquary in this church. Saint Hadelinus was born around 617 in Aquitaine. He founded a monastery in Celles. During the Middle Ages, numerous miraculous stories arose about healings and wonders performed by Saint Hadelinus: raising a woman named Guiza from the dead, causing a spring to gush forth in Franchimont near Philippeville, healing the terminally ill wife of the lord of Béon, healing a deaf-mute woman,... are just a few of the stories.
The relics of Hadelinus were transferred on October 11, 1338, on the instruction of the Prince-Bishop of Liège to the church of Wezet or Visé.
A well-known pilgrimage route leads from Amsterdam to Visé. The reliquary of Hadelinus is carried around during the annual Hadelinus procession (the third Sunday in September). His feast is celebrated on February 3rd.
