Together with the "Vlassenbroekse Schorren" and the "Groot Schoor", the "Schorren van de Durme" are the only significant remnants of freshwater marshes that still exist in Flanders. The rarity of this type of biotope can be attributed to the fact that the length of rivers in Belgium where tidal action is observed is very limited. Furthermore, many freshwater marsh areas have been lost due to further strengthening of river dikes and land reclamations, which prevent the former flooding of the areas outside the dikes.
