The Zwin was the first nature reserve in Belgium. Nowadays you regularly hear that some area is protected and will be managed as a nature reserve, but in 1952 that was a very bold, innovative idea. Moreover, was the owner? the Compagnie het Zoute ? The initiator is to safeguard the entire saltwater tidal area of 150 ha (of which 25 ha on Dutch territory). Undoubtedly, the enthusiasm and perseverance of Count Leon Lippens was at the basis of that decision. He was not only the director of the Compagnie het Zoute, but was also a nature lover and a bird expert, who had an eye for ecological coherence. Moreover, he thought it was very important that people got to know and appreciate nature. Sometimes he is called an "ecologist-avant-la-lettre".
