The inhabitants of Knokke have toiled for centuries to reclaim land from the sea. Through several small dikes, they were able to drain pieces of land until the beginning of the 15th century. Until the Burgundian Duke John Without Fear had a dike constructed that connected all the small sections of dike, thereby draining the hinterland polder. Only the classified section of this medieval dike has remained in its original state.
The Count Jansdijk is a portion of the dike that John Without Fear had built. It dates back to the Middle Ages and is the oldest section of dike on the Coast.
