No one can form an image of Lippenslaan at the painting "De Zeeweg" by Willy Schlobach from 1883. And yet, this artist set up his easel at the spot where Lippenslaan now runs. Here, you could find the untouched dunes of the fishing village "Knokke". Well over ten years after painting "De Zeeweg", this place would be renamed Lippenslaan. It was precisely this road that would initiate the opening up of Knokke. After all, it was the Lippens family who sold the polder lands that allowed a construction consortium to get to work. A hundred years later, Schlobach's sandy road would make it into an expensive street in the Monopoly game, but then as Lippenslaan. Willy Schlobach painted "De Zeeweg" outdoors in 1883, probably around the intersection of the current Lippenslaan and Elisabethlaan. He painted away from the sea. In the distance, old Knokke can be seen with the Vandamme windmill and the tower of the Holy Margarethachurch. Only the 23-meter-high tower of this fourteenth-century church remains. The Vandamme windmill would not survive a heavy storm well over ten years after the painting. Schlobach would also stay for some time in the baker's house next to the church, where the artist's guesthouse "Le Cygne" was located.
