Did you know that Vilvoorde was the first Flemish city with running water?
The old sandstone gate tower at NowÚlei 37 gave access to the Monnikhof. This farm was once a cijnshoeve and refuge of the Abbey of La Cambre.
The gate tower currently gives access to the cobbled courtyard, around which some of the old buildings from the 18th century are still located.
In the garden (not accessible) would still be the lid of the well that was tapped in 1888 by the brewer J.-B. NowÚ. He had settled here because of the excellent quality of the groundwater. The artesian well had a water flow rate of 500m¦ per day. The municipality concluded an agreement with NowÚ to use the water from this well for city use.
