The current station of Vilvoorde was built in a neo-Flemish Renaissance style and dates back to 1883. Typical features of this style include the brick masonry with natural stone beltcourses, the gable ends, the accentuation of the corners, the classical higher roofs with apex ends, and dormer windows.
The building is protected and has been renovated. The restoration work lasted two years and was completed in May 2001. The work was carried out in close consultation with Monuments and Landscapes. The façade was preserved and the interior was renewed.
In a second phase, the tracks will be renewed, the platforms adjusted, and modern escalators and elevators will be added.
Vilvoorde is one of the stops along several important connections of domestic train traffic, such as those between Antwerp, Brussels, and Charleroi, or the connections that serve a large part of the Brussels periphery from Mechelen.
