The city park – named after the then mayor Hanssens, approximately 6 hectares, was established at the end of the 19th century along the remnants of the medieval city walls. The park was created as part of a new residential area near the station.
Given its marshy character, the southern part was donated to the city free of charge and developed as a park in collaboration with the Vilvoorde horticultural school (KTA).
The designer had a distinct preference for silver maple, plane tree, and to a lesser extent, white horse chestnut.
The city park conforms to a design typical of late 19th-century landscape parks, representing the final phase of the landscape style characterized by the dominating, flowing curves.
