In the 14th century the construction of the church was started, designed in Gothic style by master builder Adam Gherijs. The existing Romanesque village church was replaced by a large, new church. In the following centuries, this rather imposing church was built further and further.
After a collapse of the vaults a few years ago, quite extensive restoration work was started. The church looks beautiful again and has been open to the public again since 1996.
In the church there are also a number of paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries and numerous old tombstones.
A remarkable tombstone is that of knight Philips van Dongelberghe. He was for a long time meier of Vilvoorde and died in 1645. This tombstone is a typical example of ultra-realism in the Renaissance. The tombstone symbolizes the transience of earthly greatness and wealth.
