Leffinge is a special place in the area because it was the center of the region that was not owned by the Counts of Flanders. The suffix -inga indicates a settlement that originated in the 5th to 7th century and means 'settlement of'. Latfin would be the person who founded the settlement. This refers to a terp settlement: when we enter the village along Papegaaistraat, we clearly feel a certain slope. This terpen might be artificial but could also date back to an old channel ridge. The fact is that the parcels were organized in a spindle shape on this slope: thus, each landowner had an equivalent share of the 'cake'. At the top was the dwelling, with the fields lower down. It is believed that these farms were primarily focused on subsistence, but likely also produced a certain surplus, especially from sheep farming, which could be sold at local or regional markets.
