The Rijselpoort is the oldest preserved city gate of Ypres and is therefore the only gate that dates back to the 14th century. The gate provides access to the road leading to Lille. It was formerly called Mesenpoort and originates from the Burgundian period. This can be seen in the Burgundian towers with which the gate is finished. The gate has been renovated several times. In the 17th century, the towers were lowered and the main wall was widened. The Rijselpoort is a land and water gate. It separates the Majoorgracht and the Kasteelgracht. It is also through this gate that the Ieperlee enters the city.
