In 2021, the Sonian Forest became part of the UNESCO World Heritage. In Europe, beech forests are part of our natural, geographical and historical heritage. Now the beech forest as a primeval forest is becoming scarce. But once upon a time, Europe was richly covered with this kind of habitat. In order to preserve that languishing piece of European heritage, they went in search of unique and original pieces of that beech forest-primeval forest. A series of 78 beech forests were selected in Europe. One of them in the Sonian Forest. And even more specifically, the core zone that we know as Forest Reserve Joseph Zwaenepoel in Groenendaal.
