Namur is located where the river Sambre flows into the Meuse. It is the capital of Wallonia and the capital of the province of Namur. Because the city is built in a valley, there has been significant expansion on the right bank of the Meuse in the municipality of Jambes in the 20th century. Traditionally, Namur has primarily been an administrative and military center, as evidenced by the famous citadel that dominates the city and is the largest defensive structure in Europe. With a large number of educational institutions at all levels – including a university, the Facultés Universitaires Notre Dame de la Paix – and major hospitals, Namur plays an important care role. The main theater in the city is the Théatre Royal. Namur has an African museum, an archaeology museum, and a museum dedicated to the most important artist the city produced: Félicien Rops. Other points of interest include the 18th-century Our Lady’s Church and the Citadel.
