Names

Namur is located where the river Sambre flows into the Meuse. It is the capital of Wallonia and the capital of the province of Namur. Because the city was built in a valley, there was significant expansion in the 20th century on the right bank of the Meuse, in the municipality of Jambes.

Historically, Namur has mainly been an administrative and military center, evidenced by the famous citadel that dominates the city and is the largest European defensive structure.

With a large number of educational institutions at all levels – including a university, the Facultés Universitaires Notre Dame de la Paix – and large hospitals, Namur plays an important care role.

The most important theater in the city is the Théâtre Royal. Namur has an Africa museum, a museum of archaeology, and a museum dedicated to the city's most prominent artist: Félicien Rops. Some other attractions include the 18th-century Our Lady's Church and the Citadel.
