Museum Square

On the Museumplein, you have a good view of the Art Nouveau building Old England immediately on your right.

Behind the balustrade in the middle of the square, the light well is hidden that is meant to relieve visitors of their sense of claustrophobia in the underground Museum of Modern Art.

The facades of the square all look the same, yet the left and the backside are a modern copy of the 18th-century facade that you are walking towards, the palace of Charles of Lorraine. The adjoining chapel now serves as a Protestant place of worship. Charles himself, the already mentioned brother-in-law of Maria Theresa, an eternal hedonist and alchemy enthusiast, is seated on the pedestal to the right in a flamboyant Rococo costume.

The young Mozart lamented in a letter to his father that the gentlemen of the court were not really listening to his concert, but were already daydreaming about the hunt the next day.
