Raeren Castle is a moated castle in the Belgian town of Raeren near the border with Germany. It is also called the "Lower Castle", as an "Upper Castle" is said to have existed in the Raeren corridor.
Initially, the castle consisted only of an almost square residential tower with two storeys, the construction of which dates back to the middle of the 14th century. Jean d'Alensberg is suspected to be the builder, but this has not yet been proven. The complex was first mentioned in a document in 1425. Even then, surrounded by two ditches and several ponds, the tower, together with the kitchen building and adjoining estate, was a fief of the provost's man's chamber of the nearby Aachen Marienstift. However, archaeological excavations in 1968/69 were able to prove that there was a smelter for iron ore at this site as early as 1300.
