At the beginning of the First World War, a tragedy took place here at half past twelve on Thursday 20 August 1914. A troop of German uhlans (lancers or soldiers on horseback) had broken down the telegraph at Lichtaart station and then ambushed themselves at this place.
Six Belgian guides on horseback went to visit them. At the front stepped the 21-year-old soldier Nestor Bayot, from Lens Saint Servais (province of Liège). Suddenly he came face to face with the enemy. He fired two shots, but was hit in the head himself and fell off his horse, which turned right and escaped unharmed along with the fellow soldiers.
