Description

Orientated neo-Gothic parish church from 1922 designed by architect H. Valcke with a former surrounding walled cemetery, built on the foundations of the church of 1792, which was destroyed in 1918 and which itself replaced a Romanesque church. Romanesque church probably located northeast of the present church, see old foundations. Part of the furniture and tower staircase of church of 1792 preserved. On December 2, 1923, the church was opened for worship and consecrated on May 14, 1924 by Mgr. Seghers. Restoration of church furniture in the 1930s. Damaged on the outside during WWII; tower rebuilt in 1941 by H. Valcke. Three-aisled neo-Gothic basilica, nave of four bays, pentagonal choir with flanking sacristy and square tower above the portal. Brick construction with natural stone for finishing, on natural stone base, slate gable and pent roofs (side aisles) and slate spire. To the north-west, pointed arched portal surmounted by a niche with plaster statue of Saint Amandus; Previously in a niche above the door of the school (see number 255). To the west of the portal is a wooden crucified Christ from 1756 by F. Hebbelinck, formerly in a disappeared bone house at the back of the former church. Continuous sandstone cordons, aisles with pointed arched linked windows and buttresses, central aisle opened by four oculi, choir with three pointed arched windows. Interior formerly with stencil friezes and murals (see recording 1943), now whitewashed with wood paneling from 1932 by H. Valcke. Granite plinth in portal in 1935, new staircase floor in high altar in 1938 and new floor in baptistery in 1939. Brick radial vault with sandstone bones and profiled consoles in chancel, central and side aisles with cross rib vault with sandstone bones and profiled consoles, pointed arched arches on columns with profiled capitals. Mobile. Carving: Saint Amandus of Maastricht, 19th century, wood and plaster. Main altar, marble, second half of the 18th century, classicist, on altar table around tabernacle crowned with dome. North side altar of Our Lady, altar table with oak altarpiece, 1938, neo-Gothic by G. Goethijn. South side altar of Saint Amandus, altar table on which oak altarpiece, 1932, neo-Gothic by G. Goethine. Choir stalls, oak, second half of the 18th century, by P. Alexander(?), depiction of divine and moral virtues and coat of arms of van Lichtervelde - van Casina, last lords of the barony of Heurne-Eine, restored in 1932. Communion rail, oak, second half of the 18th century, restored in 1932. Pulpit, 19th century, neo-Gothic, wood and canvas, G. Goethijn. Confessionals; oak, from the second half of the 18th century, one restored in 1931 by G. Goethijn. Organ, 1930 by L. Daem, restored in 1932. Baptismal font, white marble and copper cover, 18th century. Stained glass windows in choir and aisles from 1923. Sculpted polychrome Stations of the Cross, lime, 1923 by A. De Beule.
