Mary statue in chapel for Kamiel Bil

Just over the border with Oostkerke, we find the small chapel on the right side. The sign reads: Pray for the soul of Kamiel Bil, born in Dudzele on 10-1-1925. Here cowardly murdered on 21-12-1951. Kamiel had gone to fetch milk from a nearby farm run by Gerard Van de Wiele, who operated the inn Kruiskalsijde. After some conversation, he headed home and was suddenly struck by a bullet, immediately followed by another 3 shots that also hit. There was great grief in the area, but after intense investigation, they arrested Alfons Vermout (on Christmas Day), and shortly after, his brother Désiré was also arrested. The brothers had stolen car tires in the area, and Kamiel was aware of this. He knew too much, and Alfons devised the wicked plan to eliminate Kamiel, while his brother Désiré turned out to be the actual executor of the murder.
