Albert Square

Not much remains of the original architecture on this square. After World War II, property developers wreaked havoc here. The hotels and other buildings with much timber framing have made way for large-scale apartment buildings of a rather monotonous construction. On the east side of the square, near the Zeedijk, the "Carlton" with its turret remains original. On the south side of the square, there is also the very typical hotel "Memlinc" built in Anglo-Norman style. This hotel was built in 1923 according to the plans of architect Jozef Viúrin (Gent 1871 - Bruges 1949). This architect had a fondness for the English Arts and Crafts movement. Together with his son Luc, he developed a successful career in villa construction in Knokke, particularly after World War I. Thus, father and son were responsible for the construction of King Leopold III's villa at the Zwin in 1934. The King's villa was built in 'hoevestijl', which undoubtedly later became one of the reasons for the immense popularity of that style, also in Het Zoute.
