Heymans had his villa in Het Zoute and received the Nobel Prize in 1938 for his research regarding the role of pressoreceptors and chemoreceptors of the cardio-aortic and carotid sinus region in respiratory regulation. In 1998, a memorial pillar was erected in the square in memory of this eminent scholar.
