The Abbey of Affligem was in the 17th century the headquarters of the Dutch and German armies. They were stationed here for the famous Battle of Seneffe (1674), a fight against the French. On that day alone, 8000 allies were killed and 3500 French. After the battle, the armies lingered around the area, resulting in much misery for the local population. For instance, the church of Mazenzele was torched by a unit of Germans and Dutch. They were on "our" side, against the French occupiers. But that turned out to be relative. The church was set on fire and part of the houses were burned down. All the livestock was killed, all because the French would find nothing left in the village upon their passing.
