The Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk in Sint-Niklaas was built and put into use around the mid-19th century. However, it was only completely finished when the gilded statue of Mary (standing 6 meters tall) was placed on the tower in 1896.
The three-aisled cross church was designed by the Ghent city architect Lodewijk Roelandt, a strong advocate of eclecticism, the blending of stylistic elements from earlier times into a new whole. The Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk was designated a protected monument in 1973.
The restoration of the wall paintings was carried out with the support of the Flemish Community, the province of East Flanders, and the city of Sint-Niklaas.
