Just next to Grimbergen Abbey is the
the abbey founded the people's observatory 'Mira', which over the years has grown into a real attraction for all those who are interested in what is going on in the universe. He receives many thousands of visitors every year, both in groups and individual visitors. The observatory has an extensive exhibition and experimentation room, several multimedia rooms and perhaps the most extensive astronomical instruments of a Belgian public observatory. It has two fixed telescope domes, a fixed solar telescope and a whole collection of large and small movable instruments. There is also a weather station.
People's Observatory Mira is a non-profit association,
founded in 1967 by Father Pieraerts. The original observatory was located entirely in buildings of the abbey, but in 2000 a large extension was added.
