The airport of Grimbergen was built and put into operation in 1939 as a military auxiliary airfield. During the invasion of Belgium by German troops, it fell into enemy hands on May 18, 1940. At the request of the Luftwaffe, it was further developed. After the liberation in September 1944, the airport came under the control of the Allies, who continued to use it until it was handed over to civil authorities in 1946. From then on, it would almost exclusively be used for sport aircraft. Sabena also used the airport for the training of its pilots.
