Tongerlo is gradually developing from a Kempen agricultural village into a residential village. Especially in the north of the borough there are still a number of farms. The Itterbeek, along which several watermills are located, flows through the village center. In Tongerlo you can visit the Gothic St. Peter's Church from the 15th and 16th centuries, which was built on the foundations of a Romanesque church.
The Keyart mill on the Itterbeek, which was first mentioned in 1139, is also a landmark of Tongerlo. It is a water mill of the underlay type. The current mill dates from 1850. The mill and its surroundings were protected in 1994 as a monument and as a village view respectively.
The Galdermansmolen or Dorpermolen, also on the Itterbeek, was built in 1633 as an oil mill. It is a water mill of the underlay type. The mill and its surroundings were protected in 1996 as a monument and as a village view respectively.
