The Castle of Loppem was built between 1859 and 1862 and forms a single whole: buildings, furniture and decoration were designed by Edward Pugin (1834-1875) and Jean Bethune (1821-1894), creator of the Flemish neo-Gothic style. In the castle you can see paintings, especially from the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as sculptures from the 15th and 16th centuries, pottery, porcelain, etc...
King Albert I stayed there with his family from 24 October to 21 November 1918. Here the Government of Loppem was formed and two decisions of historical significance were taken: universal suffrage and the Dutchification of
higher education in Flanders.
The castle is owned by the Jean van Caloen Association.
