Although Kaprijke has not been a city for centuries, the town hall is still called Stadhuis, which reminds of the city rights that Kaprijke received in 1240. The old alderman's house is already mentioned in 1425. Back then it was still on the other side of the church. In 1663 the current town hall was built. Barely 30 years later, the attic part was burned down by the French. The damage was repaired, but in 1881 the building was again hit by fire. This was followed by a thorough reconstruction. In 1932 the town hall was restored and in 1936 classified as a monument. Until 1970, the substructure of the town hall was still operated as an inn. After the closure of that café, the building was restored in several phases, during which it was also restored to its original state inside. In addition, the beautiful cross vaults were re-exposed on the ground floor.
