The Lokeren City Museum tells the history of the city through objects, film and photo images, and stories.
The focus is on work and leisure life in the 19th and 20th centuries. A lot of attention is given to the hairdressing industry, a preparatory industry where rabbit and hare pelts are processed into felt hair for hat manufacturing around the world. Lokeren was the world center for this dirty and polluting industry in the 20th century.
In addition, the Lokeren City Museum also includes the National Butchers Museum, an old bakery, and a treasure chamber.
Temporary exhibitions are held in the old city hall on the first floor of the museum building.
