Along the right bank of the Scheldt, the Lord of Pamele founded the medieval town of Pamele around 1100, which was absorbed by its large neighbour Oudenaarde in 1593. However, only four centuries of independent government left beautiful traces, with the Church of Our Lady of Pamele as the winner.
The first church of Pamele was replaced in the 13th century by the current one, which has great value in more ways than one in terms of art history. Due to the relatively short construction period (1235-1300), the building is also stylistically a fine example of Scheldt Gothic that can be seen evolving from construction party to construction party.
