It is around the castle of Neigem, already mentioned as "castrum" in a 12th century charter, that the village of Neigem has grown. At the beginning of the 13th century, the lords of Wedergraete left the castle of Contrecoeur in Appelterre and settled at the castle of Neigem. On a "motte" rose the mighty castle with quadrangular keep, surrounded by moats and ramparts and secured by strong fences and drawbridges. It was used several times throughout the time as a garrison for foreign army gangs or as a shelter for the inhabitants of the surrounding countryside. In the 16th and 17th centuries it was extensively renovated. In 1901 it was greatly destroyed by a large fire. In 1949 the castle was rebuilt and lowered by one floor, in the 1990s the entire building was restored to its original state as much as possible with the necessary historical sense. The whole is a neotraditional tinted castle with entrance gate and state square with round corner towers on sandstone substructure with foundations and cellars in Spanish brick. On the domain, along the Halsesteenweg, you will also find a porter's house and a coach house.
Everyone talks about the castle of Neigem, but actually it is on the territory of Meerbeke. "Sageborg Castle" is another, less known but imaginative name for "the castle".
